The BN Thermic SSR Soft Start Relay (6kW) is a solid-state device specifically designed to switch high-power resistive loads, most commonly shortwave quartz halogen heaters.
It eliminates the mechanical "arching" and "welding" typical of standard contactors, effectively prolonging lamp life and preventing nuisance tripping of circuit breakers (MCBs) caused by high inrush currents.
Key Specifications
Switching Capacity: Up to 6kW at 230V AC (maximum 26A).
Minimum Load: Requires at least 250W to operate correctly.
Ingress Protection: IP65 rated (waterproof and dust-tight), making it suitable for outdoor use in beer gardens, smoking shelters, and patios.
Integral Timer: Includes an optional "Time to Off" delay adjustable from 0 to 90 minutes.
Dimensions: 125mm (H) x 125mm (W) x 75mm (D).
Core Functionality
Soft Starting: Power is applied gradually rather than all at once, which reduces electrical and mechanical stress on the heating elements.
Zero-Volt Switching: Designed for use with zero-volt devices (e.g., zero-volt thermostats or PIR sensors) to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Safety Lockout: If the unit is toggled on/off five times in rapid succession, it enforces a 30-second lockout to protect the internal PCB from damage.
Typical Applications
Commercial space heating (warehouses, workshops, churches).
Outdoor hospitality areas (restaurants, hotels, pub gardens).
Integration with PIR sensors or push-button timers to prevent heaters from being left on unnecessarily.
Important Safety Notes
Not for Isolation: This relay must not be used as a primary means of electrical isolation; a separate isolator must be installed for maintenance safety.
Device Limitations: Do not use this relay to control electric motors or contactors.
Heat Management: While the BN Thermic unit is housed in an enclosure, general SSRs generate significant heat and require proper mounting (and sometimes heatsinks) to avoid failure.
